I was real skeptical of an electric snowblower. But I went with this because it was cheaper, smaller (easier to store), lighter (I can hang it to store it and my wife can easily use it). Then 1 week after I bought it, and while out of town, we got 10" of snow overnight. I came back a few days later and had to try this thing for the first time:

Wow. This thing really cleared quickly and easily and down to the cement. Now its not as fast as others but thats expected. Also, I had snow drifts that were about 2 feet high. This has a handle on the front (and its light) so that you can operate it like a shovel and 'skim' the top of snow banks, steps, etc

But a couple of downsides to consider: The cord is a bit of a pain do deal with, the snow direction thing move a bit on its own which can get annoying, the weels are cheap plastic.

When he stopped for a second he said 'I REALLY didn't think this was going to do anything on THIS snow.! Like I said we got 10" and it zipped that off the sidewalks in no time! Today it snowed about three inches and this little blower did a great job. It left the concrete very clean, the cord was not a problem, and the wheels were adequate. It blew the snow about 8 feet so it does not have the longest throw. Where the snow was taller, say 6 inches, the snow guide had a tendency to rotate back to center so you have to watch that.

I have kids so I didn't want to deal with gas, instead bought the 1800. This snow thrower is great for light to moderate weight snow up to eight inches deep. Heavier denser, wet snow would be tougher but it still gets the job done. In this condition I would shovel when it's around 4 inches.
The chute is great with 180 degree angle to throw the snow from left, right and anything in between, whichever works for you. Plus the chute has an height adjuster where if you're throwing the snow when it's really windy you could lower the throw so the snow won't blow into your face or higher up over a wood fence.

My neighbors are jealous. This is the little red engine that could. I've used it for 2 winters now in the Northeast with no problems. My driveway is 50' long x 20' wide. If you have a small area to clear where having an extension cord is not a problem, then this snow thrower is a good choice. I have a patio that needs cleaning and it does it quickly and easily. Before buying this product I read what the manufacturer said about it working best in 6 inches and under. I have had this snow-thrower since Jan. 2005, and liked the idea of an electric alternative to the dangerous gasoline-powered monsters. I bought an electric lawnmower when I was in So. Calif., and loved it for the 20+ years it ran flawlessly! I was hoping that this electric snowthrower would be a repeat of the good lawnmower experience, but it was not.

There are REAL disadvantages to such a lightweight snow thrower, as I have painfully discovered.

PROS:

1.) As I previously mentioned, no hazardous gasoline nor oil to mess around with!

2.) This thrower can be used immediately; just plug it into the heavy-duty cable, and go! Immediate starting, no gas to pour, no oil to check nor change.

3.) Lightweight: a woman should be able to carry it to where it is needed.

4.) RELATIVELY cheap acquisition price when compared to gasoline-powered throwers.

CONS:

1.) This pee-wee CANNOT handle anything but paved driveways or walkways.

2.) SLOW... when the snow gets wet or high (over 10 inches) it is pretty much overwhelmed.

3.) Noisier than you think: it surprised me with the impeller noise!

4.) The tiny, tiny wheels are a joke: they freeze up with snow and ice and then act as a poor "set of skids", actually slowing you down.

5.) The electric cord (12 gauge,150 feet in my case) is the least of the inconveniences - gets in the way, slows my progress down.

6.) SERVICE IS A REAL PROBLEM: None of the Toro dealers know how to service this thing after a problem arises; it is an unconventional snow thrower!

7.) When the snow really flies with accompanying winds, the ELECTRIC POWER GOES OUT! Now I know why my neighbors prefer self-powered (gasoline) snow throwers!

8.) The impeller (or whatever Toro chooses to call it) is made of PLASTIC, not steel. Mine has already been replaced (at one year old point) due to total failure.

9.) The output chute tends to rotate away from the direction in which I point it, which means I have to stop and readjust it continuously. I have attempted to tighten it up so it won't rotate, but I have been unsuccessful.

If you need a real snowthrower because of serious snowfalls, then get a two-stage self-propelled one, like most of my neighbors have; that's what I am looking to purchase now!

The other detail that Toro doesn't make obvious, is the fact that this should be used on PAVED DRIVEWAYS AND WALKS ONLY!! I live in a rural area with neither, and this Toro regularly picks up a rock or pine cone and hurls it 20-30 feet! That little trick has only broken one window (so far).

This tendency - picking up rocks - has also caused the Toro to become non-functional. A stone got caught in between the impeller and the lower lip of the intake and froze the electric engine. The Toro has not worked since that incident, despite two trips to the Toro dealer in Redding, CA.

The tendency to pick up loose rocks and gravel can be lessened by keeping the push-handle down below your waist as you push it through the snow - which in turn keeps the front intake slightly elevated so no loose objects can get sucked in.

When ten (10) inches of measured snow fell earlier one season (2005), my 100+ foot driveway proved to be pretty much the maximum that this machine could handle. In fact, after the snow plow left his "donation" in my driveway, it was quite difficult getting through that mess.

A suggestion: get out early before the snow melts - and compacts itself - this makes it easier to keep the chute clear of "wet" snow, which is more difficult to clear out.

With last evening's (this was Feb. 18, 2006) light 7 inch snowfall, the Toro worked fine. It still took me 1.5 hours, but I did a 60+ foot path in the backyard, too. Again, a PAVED surface would make the chore much easier and manageable.

Would I buy this machine again? DEFINITELY NOT. I'm maxed out with 150 feet of 12 gauge cable, and after a 1.5 - 2 hour workout with this machine, I think a two-stage snow-blower would be better! If I lived where the driveways and walkways were paved and the snowfall was light, then yes, I might purchase the electric Toro again.

I have had this model since 1999 and have used it a variety of situations. Its great in heavy wet snow or light powder, from an inch or so to over 10 inches (we haven't had anything more than that). Story #1: After reading many reviews, I purchased the Toro snow thrower and am happy to report that it is well worth the investment. I live in the Washington DC area which usually has mild winters with snow falls usually less than 12 inches. Two days ago, it snowed 13 inches. I wasn't sure if the Toro could handle it, but I plugged it in and made my first pass. The snow was as high as the machine itself and it deftly threw the snow 15 feet or so (the snow was relatively light and powdery); the key here is that you should walk slowly and use a gentle back and forth motion at times. It cleaned down to the blacktop and I finished my 2 car driveway (40' x 20') in 30 minutes or so. The only con is watching out and playing with the cord.

Story #2. I was so pleased that I offered the machine to my neighbor so he could do his driveway. By this time the snow was slightly melting and it had become wetter and heavier. He had a hard time; mostly because he tried to go to too quickly which would prevent the machine from working effectively. I came back over and demonstrated how to do it and it worked just fine although it through the snow only between 10 to 15 feet. He still struggled but seemed to do better until he ran over the cord and got it wrapped around the plastic blade. It took a little while but he eventually freed the cord. I think he was happy to bring it back to me, but I really think it was more user error than a problem with th machine itself.

Bottom line: the machine has many advantages: small, light, easily storable, always starts (electric), and performs well especially in areas that have milder snowfalls, but it did handle our 13 inches quite well. The cons could be more difficulty with heavy snow and having to manage the cord. Okay, while a lot of people talk about how this little red machine saved their back, my focus was on the other side.

Being a younger Breast Cancer Survivor who has had a bi-lateral mastectomy and in the process of undergoing the reconstructive process, my chest and arm stregths and abillities are not what they used to be (though my mind still thinks they are as I am under 40). Having had another surgery requiring the replacement of my implant on one side only 3 weeks ago, I was not sure what I was going to do. My surgeon would not be happy if I was out there shoveling, so with the impending storm coming I went looking for a snow blower.

Things I was looking for:
Lightweight - lift ability
Electric - it has a lighter engine than gas and no mess or spring/winter maintenence
Cost - medium range esp since usually only get a few snow falls a year

I actually bought Yardman machine first, took it out of the box and was set to go. But was in my local Target and happened upon his one, one left on clearance for $149.99. Bigger motor, wider path, handle at the right height (other one was built for someone about 4'6"), and actually cheaper. So I bought it.

I was able to do my poorly mortared stone front path, my sidewalk and the neighbours, driveway, and about half the street, so basically two cars could park in front of my house. Did it clump and clog? 2 times but usually when I pushed it to fast into a big clump of snow. Easy fix, carefully push slightly downward on the handle so the front lifts up in the air and pull backwards, clump drops down then start motor and spins the snowt out to break clump. Would I use this if I got major snow daily, like in Western NY in 1995. Probably not, but that snow was drier and more powdery, so it probably would handle that too.

So for the ease, weight, and the machines ability, I definitely found a super bargin worth twice what I paid.

Just got back from using this snow blower. I had such a great time I'd even used it to make a path for my neighbors sidewalk. Yes, the wheels are rinky-dink. Toro would probably sell a lot more of these if people in Home Depot didn't see the cheap wheels and construe that the rest of the product was of similar quality. But the wheels pretty much become irrelevant when your using it. You have to push the snow thrower though the snow and I don't think bigger heavier wheels would make any difference - especially when you hit the ice under the snow.

I live in a three story house on a hillside. I have decks in the back that I like to keep clear and I like the fact that I can just pick this thing up and carry it through the house to do the decks and then down to the driveway to clear the berm in front of my garage (I have a plowing service for my driveway). Yesterday, I had about a 2-foot berm and the Toro made it disappear quite easily and I very easily trimmed the edge of my parking pad that the plow didn't get. I had about a foot of snow on my upper deck and it tossed the snow a long way, and relatively easily. I was afraid I'd have to toss the snow onto my lower patio and then have to go down there and retoss the same snow, but I was able to blow the snow straight into the direction I was moving - off the side of the deck. It also DOES get right down to the ground (or in this case, deck).

Another reviewer complained about the extension cord getting stiff and hard to handle, so I bought a 50' 14 gauge cord made especially for cold weather (down to -58 degrees F)and it stays as flexible as a normal cord sitting in the sun in the summertime - works great.

A friend has been shoveling snow off his decks and driveway for years, so I took it over to his house and we made quick work of it. He ordered one the same day. I love my new toy. It saves my back and beats the Hell out of shoveling!

I have some slight complaints about the spray nozzel tending to direct light snow way to high in the air, and lack of power for really wet snow (thus 4 stars). It generally works best if you don't let the snow get too thick (beyond 6 inches) before blowing. Clogs happen frequently otherwise.

I had a Toro 2 cycle single-stage snow thrower for many years. It would work only on alternate years, i.e., only when the gasline was cleaned by a pro! This despite using gas stabilizer. I finally put it on the recycle pile at the dump, for someone else to play with.

This one is perfect. I don't have to fuss with mixing oil & gas, and doubt that the "start-next-year" thing will be an issue. It's fairly light weight...I bought it to spare my back from shoveling curved walkways. It seems to do them just fine. I had a 10" snowfall which sat there for several days, through some melting & refreezing, but this little goodee did its job in a snap. The biggest fuss was getting the long extension cord set up, and getting the handle pieces together...a bit of a tight fit (I guess this is ok in the long run). And you can't just muscle it together with brut strength, 'cause you wouldn't want to damage the wiring which goes through the handle!

I find 2 problems: Like a lot of other reviewers, the long cord is a real pain. A 75' cord would be a nice compromise: 100' seems too long (& heavy), and 50' is not enough.

The 2nd problem is the material: pretty much all plastic except the handles. One wonders how many winters this will survive. They do include diagrams showing how to change various parts, but will the cost (unknown) of replacing parts be worth it? I guess the plastic construction is why it's such a light-weight, about 30 lbs. Still a little too heavy for regular lifting; I'm keeping it where I can just roll it out when needed.

I would advise anyone using this though, to plug it into either a hard-wired GFCI or get a portable GFCI to plug into a normal outlet. The GFCI will keep you from getting electrocuted, should this thing short out, or the cord get chopped as you find it & yourself in wet snowdust! Gotta watch that cord.

I'd recommend it even for a small person who can't or doesn't want to shovel, can't deal with a super-size 2-stage thrower, OR as a supplement to a 2-stage thrower for sidewalks and smaller areas. At 30 lbs., it's still not something to be lifted on a regular basis...on the other hand, 30 lbs. rolling around the ground for 10 minutes is sure a lot easier than an hour of lifting snow with a shovel! :)

ADDED on June 2008: I started to get striped patterns after shoveling my DRIVEWAY this year (thrower was on 2nd winter). I ordered a replacement plastic scaper blade, hoping that that was the problem. It was very easy to replace (2 screws), and we were back in business...no more stripes, for a reasonable cost. I ordered another scraper blader to have on hand, since I think going over the rocks which the road plower throws onto my drive must be damaging the scraper.

AND, I ordered another entire unit! I have found this to be soooo handy and unbelievably good in throwing even some of the worst snow we've had (winter 2007-08), that I would cry if the original one were to become terminal, or they stopped making this model. So now I have a spare sitting still in its box in the basement "just in case." BTW, if a foot or more of snow is forecast, I just go out when it's about 6" and do it twice. Oh, and I even managed to slowly chip away at the "wind-rows" (heavy stuff) which the road guy leaves at the bottom of my drive! Slush is the biggest challenge...must be sure to get out before the sun warms the snow into slush, since slush can't be thrown more than a few inches. Otherwise, this thing is great and mine is the cleanest driveway in the neighborhood! ;)

Third-4th year: Something came lose and the directional hand-crank is non-functional...just spins around. Temporarily, I put 2 tensioners (heavy bands) to tighten up the rod and hold the chute steady. Machine still works. But now I have to reach down and turn the chute by hand. Still not a problem; still one of the best machines I own for outdoor work.
