I live in Maryland where the snowfall is deep and frequent enough that having a snowthrower is a convenience. With a 50 ft driveway, it becomes a necessity. But a $700 dollar snow tiller becomes overkill.

We've had 5 snow falls since we got this.

Fluffy snow: No sweat. This thing cut my time shovelling by more than 75%. What normally took me 2 hrs to complete took me 30 mins with the power curve.

Compacted semi-melted snow: Also easy. It usually picks up all the way down to the underlying surface so long as its an area that hasn't been driven on or stepped on more than a few times.

Slushy snow: Also fairly easy. But the diverter needs a lock. It tends to drift from the force of heavier snow hitting it.

Ice-snow mix: A more difficult task. The offending mixture needs to be broken up before being thrown. The rotor seems to handle slightly hardened ice platelets pretty well. If its solid ice, forget it.

Deep snowfalls: Anything more than 6-8 inches gives it a hard time. I need to come at it in levels. First a take as much as I can off the top, then come back for a second round on the bottom. In practice, this means working the blower back and forth a foot or two at a time.. first the top then the bottom.

Other (random) thoughts:
- Had the chance to peer inside and was happily surprised to see the simplicity of the design. I was working on the icy snowfall in Feb 2006 in Maryland when the original slush started turning into solid ice as daytime temps dropped by about 10 degs over the hour that I was working on clearing the driveway. Hit a patch of very thick ice. The blower kicked up and the rotor stopped spinning. Cursed under my breath and expected to send it in for service. Opened it up and noticed a belt had slipped off a pulley wheel. Re-seated the belt and happily continued on.
- I have to reiterate the point about the lack of a lock on the diverter. The diverter seems to have a preferred angle and orientation (pitch and yaw) that it drifts to over time. Unfortunately for me, the pitch is way too high, almost throwing the snow straight up in the air. A future redesign by Toro would be terrific.
- I also agree with many others about the bittersweet handle switch. Instant startup. But with thick gloves on (its winter after all!) it sometimes grows difficult to keep the switch depressed. The switch is springloaded and runs along the handlebar. It has a lot of give and holding it down on one end with one hand doesn't always engage the switch. Has to be held with some force. Arthritic users might find this a terribly poor design aspect.
- The heft and weight. It's light and the wheels seem dismal. But this might be as good as it is bad. With the lighter wheels I can slide the unit sideways, which I'm often doing around tight spaces where I don't want to step into deep snow drifts. Having said that, there are times where I wished it was a little heavier so that it isn't bouncing around as much on the heavier icy parts.
- Get an outdoor extension cord for low temperatures. They remain more flexible when its below freezing.
- Its an electric motor so it has the accompanying higher pitched "squeal" than similar gas motors. Not exactly confidence inspiring. But overall, it gets the job done.

I love this little machine. The cord can be a little annoying but much less so than gas, oil, spark plugs, tune-ups, etc.
Light enough that even a weakling can carry this up and down stairs.
Throws snow a good distance and scrapes right down to the pavement.
Easily went through the 12 inches of snow in my walkway although you might have to backup and then go forward a few times to get all the snow at that depth since it is rated for 10 inches or less.
It beats shoveling by a country mile!
When I first got it, I was unimpressed with the flimsy seeming rear wheels but they work fine. The housing is plastic, not metal but the benefit is a lightweight easy to handle unit.
This is NOT a heavy duty machine but for what I use it for it is perfect.
I use it to blow the deck, the walkway between the house and the driveway and to make a path through the snow in the backyard for the dog to do his business.

I used it for the first time last night and found it to work very well and I definitely recommend it, especially for situations where you don't want to store a massive gas blower for just one or two storms a year. The other reviews are very spot on so I won't repeat what they say but just add a couple points -

- The on/off handle can be tough to keep squeezed closed as you wrestle your way through difficult snow. I wish it had a "always on" lock switch so you don't have to keep it squeezed as you maneuver it. The problem is that the handle is as thick as a banana and what with gloves on my fingers got tired pretty fast maintaining the tight grip required to keep the trigger squeezed "on". (Squeeze your fingers into a fist right now and hold that tight for a minute and you'll know what I mean.) But of course this is probably a safety feature.

- The snow funnel, which directs where the snow is blown, could also use a lock. As you blow snow directly to the side, the force of the snow gradually twists the funnel to point straight ahead.

I bought this snow thrower due to all of the positive reviews on Amazon. I have to admit it does all that the reviews say that it does. Here are my observations:

1. Wheels---as others have said the wheels look like toy wheels, but I'm not out to impress anyone. I don't have any problem with them. They wheel the unit perfectly. You just have to tilt the unit back and let the wheels do their job.

2. Cord---The first time I used the unit I had to be careful. The second time it was easy. By the third time I was a pro at it. The cord is not a hinderance. I would prefer to take 3 seconds of my time to move a cord than to mess with gas or oil or (shudder) shovel!!

3. Assembly---I can't comment on this. I had read the Amazon reviews stating that assembly can be hard. I paid the extra fifteen dollars at Lowes and bought the machine assembled.

4. Ice and snow chute problems. It clogged once but I expected that. I was experimenting on some heavy duty ice buildup that our road crew created. I pushed the ice through and within a second it was clear.

I have a large driveway a medium sized driveway and a sidewalk to shovel. I managed to do all three plus my neighbor's driveway (large) and his sidewalk in less time than it used to take me to shovel just my medium driveway. Really, this thing is kind of fun. I did everything twice today with no backache and not getting tired. It's just like pushing a vacuum cleaner.

This product surpassed my expectations, even in 17 degree frozen slush. On regular snow this thing keeps up to my pace, which is a fast walk / slow run. It takes me about 10 minutes to clear my 110' x 8' driveway. The cord isn't a problem for me at all and I am thankful this unit isn't rechargeable and heavy.
Note on the slush - I didn't want to abuse this thing, so I started out using a heavy ice scraper (the forged metal kind). I gave up after it took me 15 minutes to clear a 10' x 2' patch. This slush was frozen - not quite ice, but definitely packed and stuck to the driveway. I thought I'd just use the Toro 1800 to clear away the surface snow. To my surprise and delite the unit actually pierced the frozen slush. It was tough going because I needed to supply the forward and downward force (this thing is only 25 lbs after all), but when I did my part, the Toro did its. For certain sections I had to use an angle and backward pass to wear down the slush, but the Toro did get through it.
The plow debris at the end of the driveway, a 12' deep frozen mix of slush and snow, was quickly worn down and blown away - I lifted the unit with its convenient front and rear handles to overcome the depth.
The Toro 1800 isn't too big to clear light snow, the kind that is if left in place tends to turn to ice, but isn't deep enough for neighbors to blow away with their big gas rigs. After a full day of sun I return home to a completely clear driveway, whereas my neighbors have a coating of ice over about half of their driveway.
We just had a major snow storm for our area - 20 to 30 inches of snow (February 6, 2010). About a week ago we got three inches of snow and this thrower took care of it in no time. Then we got 10" of snow/sleet/freezing rain in Columbus, OH. When I tried the Toro 1800 -- no go. But guess what!! My neighbor's HUGH 8 HP gas blower wouldn't touch it either! The snow mix was so hard, you could walk on it in places without falling through.

My neighbors and I got together (70 year-old male, 68 year-old female, 63 year-old female, and 60 year-old female) (Okay, we had help from one neighbor's 25 year-old son). I used this snow blower today for the first time and was totally disgusted by its poor performance. Since this snow blower is very light, it glides over the snow and barely picks up any snow to throw. I purchased this thrower from Home Depot for the same price as Amazon, $240. Within 2 days, we were hit with about 10 inches of snow. The machine did very well, it moved through the snow pretty easily. It was a little tough getting through the bigger drifts, but it still managed. The biggest challenge I had was with the shoot. When moving heavier snow, it tends to wander off course. Further more, the tilt mechanism is pretty flimsy. (This first review part was done Januaury 25th)I just ordered this 2 days ago and received it already! WOW!(I didnt buy it from Amazon either and saved 6 bucks!!) ANY-who... The first thing I noticed was it was KIND of a PAIN to set up, little screws and nuts, you have to hold one side of the nut, then screw the other, it was just a bit trying. Once I did get it together I also noticed how FLIMSY it looked and felt(its really light, and it just feels more like a toy). I took it out to my driveway(53 footer) and started her up. I didn't think it worked as well as some of the poster people have said it does, but that MIGHT be due to the fact the snow I was blowing was kinda wet, not fresh powder stuff. It didnt throw the wet snow very far, but it did get most of it out of my driveway. I had about 2-3 inches of snow on the driveway, so it wasnt like I was pushing it through 6-10 inches of snow. I am GUESSING it works MUCH better in fresh powder snow. While I was pushing it though, since it is so light I found myself not using the wheels and just kind of "sliding" it along the driveway. Once I got a better feel, it seemed to work better. The cord is a REAL PAIN in the ARSE if you ask me. It took me a few swipes before I figured a little easier way to deal with the cord and now it too seems okay. I gave this a 3 star because of the cord factor being a pain, and its a little TOOOOOO LIGHT to push through snow. I will however give it a 5 star for the sore back eleviation. With this unit, at least my back isnt sore at the end of my plowing the driveway. So, all things considered, I will stick with my 3 star rating, not bad, just not great...........!!!UPDATE!!! Okay I used it this morning on a fresh snow fall from the night before and it actually worked better. So as I suspected, it DOES work MUCH better on POWDER SNOW as opposed to a SLUSHY/WATERY SNOW. I am managing the cord better to. My only problem with the cord is its so cold outside the cord gets VERY HARD, so afterwards, trying to WIND up the CORD is a hassle, but I can overlook that(so far!)UPDATE(Feb 13, 2007) Okay Pittsburgh FINALLY got its BIG STORM of the season so I was REALLY able to test this little baby today.. Tonight the snow turned to freezing rain which left my driveway like a skating rink, to my SURPRISE, this machine was even able to get up quite about of the hardened ICE on the driveway, ofcourse that was in part due to my quick thinking of SALTING the driveway 5 hours earlier to help break it up-LOl. The claim of 20 to 30 feet to throw the snow is way over done - 10 feet is more like it. However, I need a 100 foot cord to do my driveway and did it today with about 2"+ of light fluffy snow and it worked great! The driveway is both wide and long and has a large incline. It worked well and it is not recommended for this type of situation.

The cord is a problem that I have managed to work out so I still say for the money this little guy is great. Sidewalks would be a breeze for it even though a longer distance.

It is light weight and easy to handle at least for someone like me and like me is not saying much at all since I have little strength.

I have rated 4 of 5 because of the distance it can throw and the cord but for any widow out there and more especially with arthritis this is the one that should work in most situations.

I have finally had a chance to use my snow thrower. While we haven't had mountains of snow, there was enough to use it three times. Once you get the hang of the cord, it goes very smoothly. I have a long driveway, nearly 100 feet according to the 100 foot cord, and it has enough power to work well for me. My cord comes from my garage on the one side of the driveway and that seems to be the trickier side so I basically start on that side from the middle and move out and get that part over with--three swipes and the cord is no longer a problem for me--the rest is a breeze. Takes me around 20 to 25 minutes to do my driveway, two sidewalks, and my front porch in an average snowfall--that's several hours less than it would take to shovel it. Runs very smoothly although you have to watch for dips where the concrete meets as it runs so close to the pavement it can catch if you have a dip. And now I can add an update to this--we had a large snowstorm with lots of snow drifts last week. I started my driveway at least half an hour after my neighbor started his (same size driveway) with his HUGE snow thrower. I finished my driveway, sidewalk and porch while he was still working at his--and that included the extra snow at the end of my driveway that my city always manages to dump. You do need to cut the drifts down to size by going over them a few times--still, it took me less than a hour for what it used to take my boyfriend several hours to do! I don't like shoveling much, in fact getting a snowblower was a requirement for me to move from a moderate climate (SF Bay Area) to Iowa. After one and a half winters, I have found that this little snowblower is far faster and far less taxing on the back than shoveling, though it does not replace a gas powered snowblower.

The toro is great for the lighter powder snow when the temps are around 25 degrees or lower. It throws the snow probably around 10 feet or so off to the side. You can almost walk full speed if there is less than 2 or 3 inches of the powder snow with no ice underneath. It takes just a matter of minutes (10 or so) to clear my short drive and sidewalk. At 3 to 6 inches or so of powder things slow down, taking roughly 20-30 minutes to clear the area. The snow will fly around 5 feet depending on winds, and has a tendency to accumulate on my drive (2 car) from the first few passes so it gets thicker near the last few passes. Around 6 to 8 inches or so of powder snow you have to start taking narrower passes or take the snow off in multiple layers. Snow really accumulates on the drive and things slow down considerably. Around 10 to 12 inches of powder I would consider borrowing my neighbor's gas rig and clearing his drive too. This thing excels at clearing powder snow like what I have typically seen around this area.

Wet or heavy snow found when the temperatures are around the freezing point is a different story for the Toro. The throwing range is maybe a couple of feet at most and it has a tendency (an understatement) to clog. More than a couple of inches of this wet, heavy stuff is a pain to clear with this snowblower since it clogs every few feet. I will point out that shoveling this kind of snow will break your back and I would rather clear a clog than shovel cement, but it's annoying to say the least. I have a two car wide driveway which is about 80 feet long.
