Buying Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025

A handy and powerful machine, but rather cheaply constructed. Does a great job, but the drive belt broke on my first day of using it (I may have overworked it). One design flaw is that it's easy to turn on accidentally when pulling it backwards by the handle, where the very wide switch is mounted. Also, the chute tended to slowly turn during use due to the vibration. I would be willing to pay more for a more solid unit.Get more detail about Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025.

Cheap Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025

PROS: Light and very easy to use ... plug and plow =)
CONS:
- For anything over 5"inches of snow, need to do a 2nd pass ...which is what you expect from this ...
- The only thing that might be bothersome with this is the cord, which most of the time is a lot heavier than the machine. Going back and forth, you always need to adjust where the cord is so that it won't get in your way ...Get more detail about Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025.

Cheapest Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025

I've had this for two winters now.

I purchased this unit for a couple of different reasons.
1. I don't particularly like gas engine tools.
2. In my neighborhood, the usual snowfall is 1-6 inches.
3. It was cheap. I paid $225 for it here on Amazon in November 2006.

And I would imagine that if you are considering this unit, you don't already own a snowblower, and you are currently shoveling. Let me give you some insight into not only this unit, but making the break into snowblowers in general.

Snowblowers come in two main varieties: Single stage and two stage. A two stage unit has blades to chop up the snow and then an auger to throw it. These units are generally bigger, more expensive, but work in deeper snow and are "heavy duty"

Single stage snowblowers occupy the lower end of the market. They chop and blow the snow at the same time. Their front blades move much faster to do so.

Keep in mind folks, that this is a single-stage snowblower. It is not a self-propelled monster that chops and eats snow for breakfast. And most of the time, it is entirely feasible for me to shovel my driveway, just with more effort and time.

And if I only get 1" of snow on my driveway, you could just leave that and let the sun take care of it, but my wife likes it clean. And with 1" of snow? yep, shoveling is faster than snowblowing with this unit.

On one hand, snowblowing is good in any circumstance because it throws the snow OVER the banks on the side of the driveway, that means they won't be as big, but the banks on the grass will be wider and deeper.

On the other hand, snowblowing makes a big mess, especially if it is breezy. You can't snowblow into the wind. It just makes a cloud and recoats the driveway. But you can always shovel in the wind. I always snowblow first, then come back later and clean up with my shovel.

Also, consider the job you are trying to do. If it is a warm snow, you are going to have an inch or two of slush under the snow. No snowblower is going to do well in that environment. While this Toro unit will throw cold fluffy stuff up to the claimed 30 feet, the slushy stuff is less than 10 feet, if you are lucky! And wet slushy snow will cause the chute to clog a lot.

It does clear my typical snowfall no problem. And I have a 32 foot wide driveway, so I start in the middle and work out. Not all of the snow from the middle makes it to the edge of the driveway and has to be picked up again as I work my way out.

It does have a plastic scrape plate on the bottom and this blower does clean all of the way down to the concrete, which is nice. I guess because it is a single-stage electric, the blade spins really fast and makes quick work of the snow.

I like that it is light. My neighbor has a self-propelled two stage and in a lot of cases, I clear my driveway in half the time he does. I push it around quickly and it doesn't take a lot of work for me.

The worst area of your driveway to clean is at the street where the nice snowplow man has left you an area of thick, slushy, nasty stuff. It is back-breaking labor with a shovel, because it is so heavy and dense. It is also a lot of work for a snowblower. This unit will throw mine okay, but we are only talking about 5-10 feet throw distance for most of it. So, it has to be thrown twice. Sometimes I still shovel some of this because it is faster than slogging away at it with this unit.

So, what do you do when the snow is too deep or too dense to practically get with this machine? I do two things. One, I can "aim high" and not get all of the way to the pavement in one pass, just ride up on top of the lower layer, then come back for the rest. Also, once I have a path, I can nibble at the side, and say, only take half of the width of the mouth or less and it will be okay. But this is only for small areas. If this was the norm, I'd need a bigger unit.

But consider where you live. They say up to 10 inches with this unit, but at 8 inches, it is really working hard. But consider where you live, if you get a 10 inch snowfall once a year, then maybe this unit is for you. You don't need to buy a huge unit for that once a year big snowfall. Get the unit for your normal snowfall and get good value and usage out of it. Don't go buy an SUV because you want to take the kids on vacation in it once a year.

If you live in a place that regularly gets 10 inches or more, this is not the unit for you.

Discount Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025

I live outside of Chicago and this Winter has been the worst one in recent memory (save one in the 70s where the snow was taller than me). I have been shoveling the snow manually since I have owned my home and often considered a snowblower, but did not want to spend the $700 for a piece of equipment that was bulky (I have back problems) and take up space in the garage that I would probably use 1-2 times per year. But after this year, I relented and decided that I needed to get a snowblower, but was not comfortable with the girth of a gas blower and the responsibility of removing the fuel at the end of the season. So I began to think about an electric one. I did my homework and read some reviews and settled on this one pretty quickly. So I ordered the snowblower and had it delivered to my father's home so that he could deal with the minor assembly. Well he and my sister snickered at the "flimsy" snowblower and when he brought it to me in the backseat of his Nissan Maxima, I was a bit concerned - as it was very light-weight (can easily lift with one hand). I pushed it aside and thought, well I probably just wasted a few hundred dollars. This morning I arose to the reminants of our 20th or 30th snow storm this season. I looked out and thought, I will just drive over it. But once I got to the garage, I realized there was about 4 inches of snow and over a foot at the base of the drive way from the snowplow. I considered shoveling it because quite honestly I was a bit embarrased to bring this little blower out of the garage - given that the cord (I bought a Rigid 12-gauge extreme weather cord from Home Depot) weighs more than the snowblower. But I said well I will try it - even though the snow was on the wet and heavy side. After plugging it in, I was able to do my driveway (24' x 30') in about 10 minutes. It took a little longer to do the mound of snow at the base of my driveway, but another 10 minutes or so and this to was gone. It used to take me nearly 2 hours to do this manually. I cannot say how amazed I am by this thing. It took some getting used to dealing with the cord, but I am so glad that I purchased it! IMPRESSIVE!!!Get more detail about Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025.

Save Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025

Works OK but tends to blow up snow rather than directed where the chute is pointing. Makes for a cold experience as compared to a Honda or similar blower. This seems due to the lack of a secondary blower behind the primary scraper/blower. Very light weight, which is a plus, but the weight of the cord can unbalance the blower.Get more detail about Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025.

Low Price Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025

I am glad that I purchased this Toro 1800 electric snow thrower. I read alot of the Amazon.com reviews on it before buying it so that I knew what and what not to expect and what it will and will not do, and as a result it has actually exceeded my expectations. I have done my 50-foot uneven driveway and 75 feet of sidewalk here in Salt Lake City a dozen times now with 3" to 5" of snow and it performed well with zero problems. It really will throw snow well (maybe as far as 30' in ideal conditions, though normal distance is more like 20' --- far enough for my needs). It is lightweight and easy to manipulate and control - and of course it starts every time! - and I have not had any problems with the "small" wheels. I can easily put it on the back seat of my 1993 Toyota Camry. I use a basic 100' orange outdoor extension cord and have quickly learned how to work with it .... and although it does get in the way and I have to keep moving it, I got used to it quickly and it's a small inconvenience compared to maintaining a gas-powered one. Granted, it doesn't have the power to handle bigger depths of snow or heavy wet snow that well, but I didn't expect that. So I am pleased with how it performs, no hassles getting it started or buying gas, no problems with parts (yet), and the money I saved over buying a good quality gas-powered snow-thrower. Also, being smaller and lighter weight, it's easier to store for next winter!

Lowest Price Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025

I had purchased the Toro power snow shovel last year and it worked fine for the light snows we had. This year I purchased this electric Toro because there were no snow throwers left to buy in town and the Toro factory is out of the gas powered big boys until next fall. We have been hammered with major snow accumulation for a month now and I needed somthing to prevent my back from going out. This little thrower has been great and throws even the wet snow. I use it on my one car driveway and my sidewalks. Have to watch the electric cord so as to not run over it, but aside from that, I am so glad I bought it. It has saved my back and neck from lifting and tossing the heavy snow over the growing snowbanks. If I take small swaths there's not much I can't tackle - even the dreaded snow plow wall at the end of the driveway. Toro makes great products. I am buying the Toro gas powered thrower next fall so I'll be ready for anything, but this electric thrower will get me thru this season for sure.Get more detail about Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025.

Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025 Right now

I have never had a snow blower before and did not want anything too complicated maintenance-wise(i.e. gas-powered). The previous reviews on this item were on the mark, this is a good snow thrower for most snowfalls as long as it is not too deep, I would say 6-8 inches is the max of what it can handle on 1 pass, after which you'd have to do a 2nd pass. Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025 Order Now

As the titled indicates, my Toro snow thrower just burned itself out after 2 years of light use. I did nothing unusual today, just plugged it in and started to clear my driveway of about 4-5 inches of snow when after 5 minutes use I smelled something burning. I pulled it into my garage an unplugged it before examining it for anything clogging or stuck in the "blade". I couldn't find anything wrong so I plugged it in again. When I pulled the handle to start it turning it ran for 30 seconds and then I saw a spark come from the end that contains the electric motor at which time it died. It never did a great job, especially on wet packed snow, and the electric cord was a pain, but I would have rated it a "4" on performance given its limitations. Very disappointing to shell out $300 for something I used so little but I'll take it to a local service center to get an estimate for repair. It probably needs a new motor but if the total cost is over $100 I'll just chuck it and borrow my neighbors gas snow thrower for the rest of the winter.

UPDATE: 2/29/2008, I removed the electric motor and found the armature to be damaged. The replacement part cost is $168 from a local Toro dealer. This cost is for the part only, no labor involved, and more than half what the entire snow thrower costs. The Toro dealer suggested I buy a new one instead of replacing the motor. Needless to say I didn't buy the replacement motor nor did I buy another Toro 1800 Power Curve. I bought this snow thrower because of the high rating it was given by many reviewers, not realizing that most of them were not long term ratings. I liked mine too, when it worked, but am very disappointed in its reliability. It would be interesting to see what other purchasers of this snow thrower say after 2-3 years of service instead of 1-2 months. Would they still rate it 4-5 stars?

UPDATE#2: 3/14/2008, After contacting Toro by email, explaining my problems and that I owned the snow thrower for about 2 1/2 years and thus outside the warranty period, they graciously offered to repair or replace it if I sent it back to them at my expense. So I disassembled it, packed it up in the original box and brought it down to a local UPS center. The cost was $38, but 2-weeks later I received my seemingly new unit from Toro. I assembled the unit and started it up with no problems. Now I need some snow to try it out. So although it was a time consuming experience, with some expense, I am very impressed with Toro's customer service and would rate them 5-stars in that area. The short lifetime of the original unit was disappointing but at least the manufacturer stood behind their product. We'll see how long this one lasts but I'm satisfied with Toro and would buy another product of theirs based on their customer service.Get more detail about Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025.

Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025 Best Quality

We have had the all time record snowiest winter in Madison WI this year with another good month of snow to come yet. I received this blower three days ago and what a time saver it is. Once you get used to the cord it is amazing how well it clears the snow and how far it actually throws it. For weighing only 24 pounds it really does an excellent job. the Toro 1800 gets down to the surface, much closer than my gas powered blower. I used it on 2 - 8" loose to packed snow and it did an excellent job. Easy to handle due to the light weight without all the headache of gas and fumes to mess with. I just wish I had gotten this blower sooner as most of the snowfalls have been around 2-6" each all season and this would have been easier to transport between the two houses I clear snow at. Delivery and quality of merchandise were exactly at advertised by Amazon. The price with the current discount is at least $65 cheaper than local retail if you can find one up here. Thank you! Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025 Get it now!

After getting a Toro 1200 power shovel from a family member after they got a snowblower, I found myself wondering why I had read about how inconvenient electric snowthrowers were. People complained about the cord getting in the way, and how they didn't do the job. I live in Central Massachusetts, and even the little power shovel was up to the task of clearing a 4" snowfall off the driveway. But it really couldn't handle deeper snow.

As I was researching what type of snowblower I wanted, I felt myself growing uneasy at the prospect of having to use a gas-powered snow blower. Would it start? What would maintenance cost? I'm not a mechanically inclined person. Then I noticed the Toro 1800 on Amazon, at about half the price of many gas-powered snowblowers. I looked at the reviews and decided to buy it.

I've been delighted with it. It's gotten jammed a few times with a thick stick or a rock, but I've been able to unjam it fairly easily. Even though the blade is plastic, it's very sturdy. And best of all, I just plug it in and it works - I don't have to worry about maintenance or gas or oil or the temperature. It cleared 8" of snow off the driveway in record time a few weeks ago. And it really can throw the snow away from the driveway, far better than its little brother the Toro 1200.

So now we have the Toro 1200 for small snow storms, and the 1800 for bigger ones. I'm an adamant fan of both.Get more detail about Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025.

There are a couple of things I'm not crazy about with this snowblower - the "on" lever is too wide so you land up turning it on accidentally when pulling it backwards; and there should be a better device to adjust the angle of the chute....currently you have to use wrenches to adjust it. When I first bought the Toro 1800, the guy up the street with a big gas-powered unit, was openly skeptical. Then we had an eight inch snowfall and he watched as the Toro just ate up the snow and tossed it well away. "What a little beauty," he said. Toro. Great stuff. This week we have had three days of heavy snow totalling over three feet, and the Toro has excelled. Light, fast and a great price. It clears our three-car business parking area plus 120 feet of driveway. Light enough to go in the trunk to our other place. I love my Toro snow blower! Easy to get around and it really blows the snow 10 to 20 feet! It depends how wet the snow is! No gas and oil to mess with! This little wonder works better than the monster snow blower my neighbor has! If I get a big drift I put it on top(its only weighs about 25 pounds)and rock it back and forth and it eats away at it! Positive- it works every time, it's inexpensive, and it's durable.

Negative- cord gets in the way a LOT; if you're in a windy area, you should probably get something with more power; and, I wish there was a way to rotate the thrower chute without having to bend so far over each time.

Buying Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025

My husband and I fought over between getting an electric snowthrower or a gas powered one for many years. For me, a petite woman, handling a gas powered snowthrower just wasn't an option- they are too big and heavy for me to operate. My husband wanted the power of a gas powered machine. This winter, he finally gave in and bought this Toro electric snowthrower. It had enough power for what he wanted, and it was light enough for me to handle.

What a mistake! We have a 50-foot long flat driveway that we thought would be a breeze to use the Toro on. The first time we used it, we had a bit of a learning curve due to the extension cord. It does take a little time to get used to. It's like using a vacuum cleaner, only outside. It worked well. One tip: spray the snow chute with Pam or some other non-stick cooking spray before you use it. Wet snow won't stick to it, and you'll have far less clogging problems!

We used it a total of three times within 2 months before it broke. The motor worked, but the plastic part that rotates the snow no longer turned. We took it to the closest repair shop (an hour away!), and they refastened the fan belt. When we got home, we tried it on a 1" deep area of light snow, and the fan belt came off again.

We took it back to the repair shop, and they said that a bolt that holds the wheel that turns the fan belt had come off. They refastened it and claimed that it was fixed. When we got home, we tried it on another 1" deep area of snow. It worked for five minutes, then the plastic part that rotates the snow stopped turning again!

We have to take it back for a THIRD time for repair, but we are expecting that the repair shop will simply send it back to the manufacturer for replacement.

This product is simply not up for clearing out even light snow. I've told my husband that we should get a gas-powered snowthrower now- this snowthrower is simply too unreliable. We feel like we've wasted our money on this. Don't waste yours!Get more detail about Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025.

Cheap Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025

Our Toro 1800 was purchased from Amazon.com in December '07 after accepting the fact that our 30 yr. old Toro gas snowblower had finally outlived its usefullness.

I wanted something that wasn't finicky and that I could easily operate (just plug it in and roll)and this baby fits the bill to a T!

I just moved 6+ inches of a medium-density Illinois snow off my approx. 3000SF driveway in 1 hr.! That time was unheard of with our former machine. The 1800 had plenty of power to tackle snow as tall as the squirrel cage and even handled the plow "wall" effortlessly.

It stores easily and is ready for the next storm...and so am I. No longer are snowstorms a thing of dread when clearing our challenging site, which consists of an uphill drive with a curve thrown in for fun.

The price was a lot more reasonable than I thought possible to replace our old heavy, tempermental machine and I wish I had purchased this model years ago.

Discount Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025

Strengths: good in powdery snow, lightweight, easy to set up, quick to put a way. Throws the snow left, right, or any direction in between. Working with an extension cord can be a challenge when you are working on a larger driveway or walk. The unit is primarily plastic with small plastic wheels, a plastic impeller, the bottom scraper is plastic as is the housing and snow chute. Because of this the unit is very light and easy to work with but ... well its plastic. A good extension cord will prevent the cord from pulling out of the handle. Overall it works well on powdery snow but the unit is pricey for the construction. In particular, the wheels on the unit are plastic, small, and flimsy. I don't know how this would work with wet slushy snow, and harder packed snow was a problem and likely accelerates wear on the plastic impeller blade. It was easy to assemble and it does store easily but I would consider a more durable snow blower before opting to buy this particular product if you have to deal with frequent snow.Get more detail about Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025.

Cheapest Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025

Product worked great for a couple of days, then the main drive belt snapped (i was blowing 3-4 inch snow) So called there customer service and was told to take it to the closest dealer so they could check if it was manufacture defect or user error. I really didnt want to haul the thing down there so i called to just order a belt ($12) which i would fit myself. Basically the belts are were on back order and have been for some time. 3 Week lead team for a Belt, Really this should be a common part thats likely to need to be replaced at some point. Wanted to give this a good review as the unit worked very well at first but let down by terrible customer service.Get more detail about Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025.
