Toro thoughfully used different sizes for the hex head bolts and the nuts, so they could be tightened with one socket set. You also have to attach the top of the chute to the bottom of the chute with carriage bolts and nuts.

I bought this at the start of last winter season. I had a bout of severe lower back pain. Even though I felt better by the winter last year, I wanted to buy a snow blower to respect my weaker back. i deicded to purchase this item after reading the many positive reviews. So perhaps my case is just an aberration. I received it just a day before our first snowstorm here. I was eager to try it out. There were maybe 2 or 3 inches of light fluffy snow on the driveway. I plugged it in, turned it on and it worked great, shooting snow to the side a good 30 feet. That lasted for about 10 minutes, and then it simply stopped working.

It still got juice, that wasn't the problem. I could see that when i put the power on, the rotary thingy that picked up the snow wasn't turning, even after i cleared it of snow. I could manually turn it with my hand, but it wouldn't by itself. I thought maybe some part i couldn't see had frozen (it was probably 32 degrees out, not abnormally cold), but anyway, i decided to bring it in my basement (about 50 degrees) and let it sit there for about an hour, but i tried it again and it still didn't work.

I called the Toro dealer and she said it sounded like a broken belt. How could the belt break so quickly? It's brand new!! So this a.m. i had to go to the trouble of dropping it off at my local Toro dealer/repair place, and it won't be ready for 7-10 days. It's covered by a 2-year warranty, so i won't have to pay for the repair, but i'm most annoyed by this inconvenience and hassle with something i've owned for less than 24 hours. And unfortunately, our next snow storm is coming tomorrow night, so despite shelling out $279, i will still be shoveling, and not too happy about it.

I've had my 1800 for two seasons. And it is The Bomb! In Chicagoland,we get a fair amount of snow, most recently, a 7-inch fall. The 1800 handled it with ease, ejecting the snow 30- to 40 feet away. With a little patience, it will munch its way through the foot-deep berm deposited across my driveway by the city plow. Deeper falls might require multiple passes. Not sure about this. Still, it works equally well on my driveway, sidewalk, a lumpy flagstone walkway and even across bare ground. Need to move it over a curb or something? Just pick it up by its handle - it's easily portable.

So why four stars? First of all, it's not happy in really wet snow or slush. But is any snow blower? Second, the "string" attached, that is, the electrical cord. It saves you the hassle of gas or gas/oil, cold weather starting and so on. But you have to manage the cord, every minute, every move. This is okay with me. I'm used to it.

I bought this last year, but it was not til this weekend's Nor'easter that I had a chance to see what it was made of. Like another reviewer, I'm just north of Boston and we frequently get 4-6" of pretty heavy snow... This weekend was another story- first came the fluffy snow, then the temp went up and it rained, turning things to slush, then it got very cold, of course turning things into cement. Snow totals were in the neighborhood of 1-1.5 feet, plus some left over from a previous storm.

For the first two scenarios, the Toro did remarkably well. This thing will motor through 6 or 8 inches of snow without batting an eye, and it will throw it a good 15 feet. It's fun, it's easy to use, it's super light, and it's relatively quiet. Did I just say clearing the driveway is fun? Well, it is, kinda... For slushy snow- I used my in-laws two-stage snow machine to try to clear a few inches of slush with no luck, that thing would clog like an old snow cone machine. When I came home, the Toro just paddled its way through it, and if you went slowly enough, cleared the thick soupy stuff with great agility. As other reviewers said, if you have a smaller driveway to clear, this thing will have you out and done before you've checked the gas on your old one. A thick crust of ice or large ice rocks will be a dealbreaker on this machine, where a more solid one or two stager might get through it.

PROS: light, relatively cheap, no maintenance/oil/gas, quiet, good for smaller driveway and sidewalk, portable (hey you can even take it to the inlaws!)

CONS: not even sure why they have the plastic wheels on the back it doesn't really seem to need/use them; structure feels a little toy-like but really performs despite this, this machine does not like ice or rocks; it also doesn't like being pushed too fast. Also, it's physical size mean that more than 8-10 or so inches of snow will ride over the top and be harder to clear. It'll still handle it, but may require 2 passes.

Just finished the second snow removal of the season. First was about 6" of light snow, the second a three inch mix of snow, sleet and ice. Clearing 40' of walkway and 40' of single car width asphalt driveway. Plus, a path for the mailbox and trash can and a patch for the dogs (don't ask). Job 1 was no problem after learning how to use the machine. Job 2 was more of a bear because of the ice on top.

However, while the total time was probably longer than hand shoveling (get out the blower, get out the cord, untangle the cord since the spouse had used it and dumped it into a pile, snow blow, put the blower back, rewind the cord, etc.), my ancient and decrepit body was able to move the snow (even that dumped by the town at the end of the drive, bless their hearts) with nary a back twinge or sprain. Not that I didn't complain to the bride. And not that it did any good, but I thought I'd stay in practice in case a big job came up. At any rate, escaped an ambulance ride one more time.

While clearing the ice, it sounded like a blender at times. However, despite the light weight plastic construction, by making a couple of passes, the Toro did a decent job - much better than I expected, frankly. And the light weight is an advantage when moving the blower around.

Speaking of which, the chief annoyance is the power lever which spans almost the entire length of the handle. It is next to impossible to move (reposition) the unit by the handle without having it start up. The second minor annoyance is that the cord likes to vibrate free from the plug socket despite the convenient cord "pass-through."

Bottom line: does what I need it to do without the hassle of a gas powered unit. Should be able to clear a foot of "normal" snow although you might have to make a couple of passes. Use a 14 gauge two prong 100' cord rated for low temperatures (I use 12-3, but that is overkill). You can get the cord for $45 or less (Home Depot, Costco, Sam's, Wal-mart, BJ's, etc.). I also see the price of the Toro is up $60 to $320.00 in the past couple of months (12/2007) and much higher than the $200 I saw it for last year. Still cheaper than a gas unit and will do the job of a small gas unit for up to a foot or so of dry snow and a distance of 100'.

PROS:
- Electric.
- Easy to set up and operate.
- Lightweight, compact, (mostly) quality construction.
- Works well on dry, powdery snow.
- Will cut through some ice and slush. Have patience and let the blower do the work.
- Gets me out into the relative peace and quiet of the great outdoors where I can smile at the Prius drivers while their landscapers push around huge gas operated machinery.

CONS:
- Some assembly required (not tough, but save the beer for after the job).

This thing is pretty incredible. Just got it today, and it's already snowed 4-5 times and previously I have just been shoveling.

My driveway was already plowed by the time I got this, so I had to try it out on other things, like the 2-3ft snow banks that haven't been touched by a shovel since the beginning of the snow season, or the banks that I created by shoveling, also fairly high.

I simply placed this thing on top of the snow bank and pushed it back and forth on top of it, and it ate away large sections of the snow bank at a time. It even cleaned up the ice/slushy stuff where my property meets the road.

I'd rate this 4.5/5 since the thing is literally one big piece of Tonka plastic... but since that isn't an option I'd rather give it a 5 than a 4. The height adjustment is also a little flakey... doesn't seem to hold down, but I think I may need to tighten it, as I've been wearing to strip the plastic like I've heard in some reviews.

We went to the local hardware store to look at and perhaps purchase one of these. I have to say that I was very disappointed in its robustness and appearance in general. It looks and feels like a cheap plastic toy with an expensive price tag. Great little sucker this snowblower is. I was impressed by the number of stars other reviewers had consistenly given it and I couldn't agree more. It arrived just in time for our first heavy, slushy snowfall in Wisconsin, which means it was put to the test right away. At first, I thought "boy, this things is not throwing this stuff very far(only about 3 feet away)", but when i tried to hurl the unforgiving snow with my $9.00 metal shovel I realized how hard this little Toro was working. The stuff was heavy, as was my breathing after 2 minutes of shoveling, so I decided to let the Torino do it's thang again. It cleared about 800 sq ft of drive way in about 40 minutes. Then, when the next snowfall came around, the snow was lighter and my Torino had to show-off it's prowess by throwing snow about 8 feet into the air, much like Old Faithful (geyser)in Yellowstone shoots that warm volcanic water!

Bought this Toro at Home Depot yesterday in anticipation of 8 inches last night. I pulled it out this morning, plugged it in, and went to work. It went through the 9 inches very well for such a light machine.
