After researching the unit on the internet, including video at Youtube,we rolled the dice for $299 via Amazon. It arrived four days later, undamaged in its sturdy, well-padded carton. Minimal assembly was accomplished in about fifteen minutes with a basic ratchet tool. I did not experience any assembly issues with the handle or anything else.

I was anxious at first, because the unit is lightweight and almost Mattel toy-like in appearance. The outer casing is all red and black high-impact plastic. It has tiny little wheels at the back like a vacuum cleaner, but these are adequate for their intended use, which is to wheel the unit from wherever you keep it to the snow.

We have a straight, fifty-foot driveway, two cars wide, between the garage door and the street in front of our house. The moment of truth came after an eight-inch, semi-icy wet snowfall.

Fortunately, the little monster exceeded all expectations. It smoothly took in the snow right down to the pavement and threw it into a twenty-foot arc. It has rotary blades that actually sit on top of the snow and help propel it as you push it. It is light enough to lift onto a threshold or deck, yet powerful enough for the driveway and sidewalk.

If you can push a vacuum cleaner, you will have no problem handling it. It has an operational feel between vacuum cleaner and lawn mower, but without the gas, choke, and pull-cord hassles. Handling the power cord is a non-issue, just tie it off at the corner of the handle, keep it behind you or to the side, and forget about accidentally unplugging it or getting it tangled in the blades.

I have owned the toro 1800 Snow thrower for 4 years. In that time I have found it excellent for cleaning the driveway and my second story porch. In my experience, this is the perfect unit for fresh snow up to 6 to 8 inches in depth and of a powder consistency. If you attempt to use it with wet heavy snow don't expect it to go through more than 2 or 3 inches in depth. Another "gotcha" is that it's the snow freezes overnight and you attempt to plow it the next day you will have a difficult if not impossible time doing so. I attempted to go through this ice and ended up having to replace the impellor at a cost of about $75 and an hour and a half labor. For this reason I purchased a two-stage snow thrower with electric start, lights and all the bells and whistles. This is the one that I keep in the garage and use it to clear the driveway and in particular the berm that the snowplow leaves at the end of it. I have now relegated to the toro 1800 to my upstairs balcony and porch where it is always handy after a fresh snowfall.
