I purchased this machine autumn 2007. We received 5 meters (15 foot) of snow last winter in Québec, useless to say that the snow thrower has to work hard! It performed well to clear the driveway (15x20) and pathway. Since we received that much snow, I found the machine to be limited when having to push the snow high enough to reach the top of the snowdrift. And when the snow is more dense, it's sometimes hard to push the machine through snow because of the large sidewalls (each side of the blade). This is more a problem because of the flimsy handle. The main problem I had with the machine is when snow gets in the case, condensation and humidity make the strap slip so the blade won't turn... When that happens, you have to let the machine dry in a warm dry place and it comes back to normal. That's the main problem with the Toro 1800.

I bought this machine because I don't like noise and I don't like to use gas. The machine broke a few times this winter for the same reasons : the strap. Well, no, a bearing too. But the problems are always, as others have decribed here, with the strap or what is around it.
This product could be great. It's light, silent, does not pollute air, takes little footprint.
But after 2 straps and a bearing in the month, I began to ask myself if it was a strong enough product for my use. And worse, the strap started to fall off the pulley each time I used the snowblower. It was enough for me. The machine is now in the recycle bin.
If you have a few inches of snow from time to time, it may be ok for you. But if you have snow like I do here in Quebec (more than 10 feet/year), don't buy this machine. It's made for light work only. I bought the Toro 1800 electric snow thrower last winter, and it performed well for me all last winter. I got it out of storage today to deal with our first real snowfall of the season, and it again worked great.

I bought it here at Amazon.com, which was a great buy and free shipping to boot! (Before that, I had been out shopping and noticed this same model for sale at Home Depot. I asked them if they would match Amazon's price, and they said no, that Amazon was not one of their competitors. I said, "Alrighty then", and promptly ordered it from Amazon; it arrived in a few days, just in time for the next big snow).

My only real complaint is that it requires a cord, and a long one at that (for my long corner lot sidewalks, that is). The cord really isn't *that* big of a deal...somewhat of a hassle, for sure, though.

Otherwise, it works great! It does what it is supposed to: clear lots of snow. No, this thing doesn't handle medium or larger ice chunks. But, I have found that it really does do a pretty good job even on wet/heavy snow, as long as it is not too deep. On lighter snow, up to around 8 inches deep, this thing is a breeze (and, it will work with deeper snow, but requires more effort and time).

I was very skeptical about buying an electric snow thrower, but for my current location, where we get an average of 50 inches of snow per year, this does the job well.

If you think you can handle the moderate hassle of using a cord, then definitely get this snow thrower. You won't be disappointed with it's performance!

I just read one review where a woman said she had trouble assembling the handle on this thing, and was, in fact, unable to assemble it. That reminded me that I also had difficulty assembling the handle. It was quite frustrating, and I felt like I might be doing it incorrectly or might be damaging the cord. In the end, I was able to get it together with some pretty decent force and wiggling. In hindsight, maybe a little grease on connection areas of the handle bars would have helped. So, yeah, assembly, particularly the handle assembly, was a big pain. Just purchased this unit from my local Home Depot around the 2nd week of November 2008 in anticipation of a large storm (which never came). Read several reviews that claimed this was a good blower. Unfortunately, I had my first and last problem with this unit when I fired it up this past weekend. Tried to blow 1 inch of light snow to test it out. The Toro 1800 Power Curve snow blower was pretty simple to assemble, but there are two points that need attention.

First, and VERY IMPORTANT is when putting the handle together. There are two bolts that hold the top and bottom part of the handle together. The wire from the switch to the motor is fed through one of the handle bars. It's way too easy to damage the wire with the bolt. I tore the outside insulation, but the interior wires are still protected.

The other problem with assembly is the chute that directs the snow. There are a couple of bolts with self locking nuts that need to be tightened tight enough to hold the chute in position yet loose enough to allow the chute to stay in place. The bolt heads are held in position by a square hole in the plastic. When I tried to tighten the self locking nut, it was tight enough that the bolt was spinning in the plastic wearing out the square hole. I ended up replacing the locking nuts with a regular nut and lock washer. I'll have to watch them so they don't come loose.

Last night there was about 5 inches of fairly wet and heavy snow. I first used a shovel to roll up about the first 10 feet of my driveway (2 car wide / 4 car long) and then tried the blower to move the piled up snow. The pile was about 12-15 inches deep and pretty well packed. The blower did just fine sucking up about a 10 inch wide swath and blowing it into the yard. I did the rest of the 5 inch deep driveway from side-to-side blowing the snow all the way across the driveway and into the yard. It worked just fine. The snow chute worked pretty good allowing to me change the direction on the move. The up-and-down part was pretty good and allowed some aiming of the snow, but not as much as I would have liked.

The main points for me is quietness and ease of use. Just plug in and go. I haven't had a problem with the extension cord. I have a 100 foot 16/3 cord I use for my weed eater that seems to work just fine. I can also pick it up with one hand and move it around the garage - try that with a 3hp snow blower. If we get a foot or so, I may regret it (maybe not) but those don't happen very often. By the way, I bought this at a local hardware store - it cost me $30 more but I like to support local stores. When I opened the box, my first impression was, I had made a mistake ordering the electric Toro. I thought it should have been built heavier. After assembling the unit, with only four bolts, I put it to the test on 8-10" of snow left on the deck and patio. I was amazed, it cut through the 3 day old snow with ease even though it had settled and a crust had formed, it threw the snow 25-30 feet.

If it freezes too hard, thawing may be necessary.

This is a great product for people who need/would like a snowblower, but don't want to deal with a large, heavy blower which needs to be serviced and maintained every year. This blower is so lightweight that I store it on the wall which is great since I don't have much room in my garage.

Since this snow blower is electric there is no need to use gas and is a big reason I purchased this. This also means you don't have to drain any gas at the end of the season. I have a 4-year-old electric snow shovel (Murray) that really stinks. I often joke with my family that people probably take pictures of me trying to use this pitiful product. In addition to this, all the local salesman I talked to laughed when I told them that I was considering an electric (especially in Wisconsin winters). All of them tried to talk me into a gas thrower with one gentleman actually suggesting the cheaper gas 1-stage throwers would even be too lightweight for my needs (he recommended an $800 2-stage at a minimum).

Finally with our third snowstorm (today) delivering about a foot of snow with more on the way, I couldn't take it any more and bought the Toro 1800. The electric really appealed to me because of the small area I needed to clear, the fact that I wasn't going to reek from gas/oil fumes and the low/no maintenance. A saw my Dad struggle for years trying to start his gas thrower starting with only his second season of ownership.

I was a little nervous because, stepping outside, I barely got out of the house with all the snow against the door. Some of the drifts and the plow piles where 18 inches high! I started getting a sick feeling that I had purchased the wrong tool, but this little thrower exceeded all my expectations - it just worked!

It handled the driveway and walkway with ease. The snow drifts and plow piles I needed to use a little patience with; I pushed the Toro into the snow and pulled it back letting the snow that was above the opening of the thrower fall down for the next pass. You can also pick up the Toro and shave layers of snow which I tried, but the first method worked better.

My comments on other people's review points. The Toro cleaned right down to the pavement and no part of the thrower clogged during its first use. I would imagine that if chute clogging (a typical snow thrower problem in general) ever did happen, I could use a little silicone spray to prevent it.

Cons: The only problem that I need to tackle is the bolt holding the output chute. As others have mentioned here, the force of the snow coming out of the chute tends to push the chute up resulting in snow shooting higher into the air for wind to blow it back. The bolts are supposed to be a little loose to allow you to change the show discharge angle. If you tighten the bolts with a couple wrenches, then you wouldn't be able to adjust the chute without loosing them. I don't see this as a problem.

So I ended up clearing out 12-14 inches of fairly wet snow without any problems. With a typical snowfall in my area being 3-5 inches, the Toro 1800 should be able to handle all of them with ease. If you are in the same position I was regarding purchasing this device, I can assure you that this Toro will be a great purchase! If your area gets more snow than mine, only then would I consider a traditional gas thrower.

We bought this last week. Since we have our drive way plowed by a landscape company we wanted to use the TORO 1800 to clear our relatively short front walkway. Although the box was in good condition and there appeared to be no exterior damage to the item, it has not worked since it arrived. The belt comes off the large pulley almost as soon as the machine is engaged, and then then rotor does not rotate. We spent quite a lot of time opening up the plate in order to place the belt on the pulley again. Each time the same thing happens, and the belt slips off. Not surprising because the large pulley is very cheap looking and is not a well made part. When we called TORO we were told they have a "No return, No replacement policy." Therefore we have to drop it off 15 miles away to be repaired. Very time consuming, inconvenient, and it is unclear if it will be repaired so that we can use it. The Snow Joe had 13 amps and The Toro only 12 - but I figured that Toro's quality would be worth the extra cost. After owning some Toros in the past, I believed that Toro was a quality product. NOT ANY MORE!!! They are, apparently, joining America's Corporate sell-out by out-sourcing their manufacturing somewhere (China, Taiwan?) even WORSE THAN WAL-MART. (Just a guess...due to the HORRIBLE QUALITY of this Toro snow thrower!!) Wal-Mart's Snow joe was MUCH BETTER MADE, STRONGER, AND WITH BIGGER, BETTER TIRES!! I now wish I had never returned it, paying EXTRA for an INFERIOR TORO!! This Toro 1800 Power Curve ("Power" - HA!) HAS WORSE "TIRES" THAN MANY OF MY GRANDCHILDREN'S TOYS!!!! And they are so small that it's hard to even push the machine on packed snow or already cleaned surfaces!! The Snow Joe's tires were probably 8", the Toro's maybe 4"! Guessing how big is not my forte' but these Toro tires are TINY in comparison!! I desperately need this piece of junk, as we here in North Idaho are facing another record breaking snow storm again this weekend. The phrase 'Some Assembly Required' strikes terror in my heart. But I was able to put this machine together in no time at all. And it worked like a dream from the first try. We had had a 12" snow and a few days before that had had a 4" snow that hadn't been shoveled and had crusted over. Bought this tool based on reviews from here - would have gotten it from Amazon and saved the tax but when I came home to NY from AC there was 5 inches of snow and slush in my two car driveway. The wife does not appreciate putting not being able to garage her 'Audi', so off I went to local the HD to get the this blower.

It works well. Putting together was easy, however the way the plastic parts came together took a little extra effort and had me worried about the durability - time will tell. The snow-ice mix was a day old - the Toro went right through it. I had no problems whatsoever. The outlet port only got full once, when I was tackling the plow buildup at the apron of the driveway. Speaking of the plow buildup (about 2 feet high), I then appreciated the plastic construction, because the initial breakthrough required picking it up and shaving it from the top down. Once through, I attacked the pile laterally, and it went quickly.

I give it four stars because I don't know how long it will last, and I did need to break up the plow drift with a shovel in order to make it quicker to get through. I bought this snow thrower almost a month ago, and have used it 4 times since. I live in a north west suburb of Minneapolis, and we have had a snowier than normal December. So the purchase was right in time. Being that this was my first snow thrower, which I bought for the first winter in my first house, I wanted something that would work well enough, but not be too much for my situation. I have a 2 car wide, ~55 foot driveway which can be shoveled in about 25 minutes if it is just an inch of light snow. With this little power horse, I can clear the same space with even more snow (only done up 6 inches so far) in about 15-20 minutes. And I expect to get my time down even farther than that now that I have had a little bit of practice.
The snow thrower seems well built, and is extremely simple to operate. I liken the use as to using a vacuum. If you can use a vacuum, you can use this device. A lot of people will list the cord has a Con, but using the vacuum metaphor again, it is a lot like using a vacuum in that you just need to be aware of where the cord is, and move it as needed.
It is also light enough that I can lift it (if needed) to get it around our cars to get it out of the back of our garage. That is something I would not be able to do with gas throwers. In calm winds, I can throw about 20 feet (30 if you are pointing straight ahead.
If there is any real fault of this device, it is that it will not really chew up the densely packed snow/ice that the plows leave at the bottom of my driveway. I have actually picked at that stuff with a shovel before I take the thrower to move it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. That is the real reason it gets a 4 starts instead of 5.

Pros:
-Although it is all plastic, it is very well built.
-Great throwing distance.

Bought this one a year ago, and have loved it ever since. Live in northern Massachusetts where it does snow, and sometimes too often. Last week we received 10-12" and this little snow blower did a wonderful job. Now, lets be realistic, it is light weight and portable, and I bought it because I move from apartment to apartment, so lugging a gas powered beast is not my style. As it is lightweight, it does not do great with slush, not because it cannot throw it, but because the thing is so light it cannot dig in. These events do not happen often, and a little work and it will still do the job.

The other area where it struggles is 12"+ of snow, only because the thing is only 12" tall or so. Again, it works, you just have to work a little more at it whereas a 200 lb gas monster could pull one of those monster truck moves. And when I say work at it, I really mean dicing up the snow or cutting it down so the snow blower can handle it.

For reference, my driveway is 4-5 cars wide and one car deep, and the snow plow operator has no other place to push the snow but into my driveway from the one lane road with a solid fence opposing me, so you can see I have a fair bit of shoveling, and in the last month it has displaced a total of 20" of snow in 3 separate storms.

Some nit picking, the directional throw chute does not stay pointed to the side with heavy snow, it will work its way back to the straight ahead position and up. Also, get a cold weather extension cord! The typical orange ones freeze, and that makes moving around more difficult. There is a safety key also, but I feared it falling out in the snow at night, so a little work and I was able to turn the key and then remove it still in the on position. Most will not do this, but I do not want to lose the silly key and not be able to use the snow blower.

Since I have not referred to its power, it is fine. Actually, I worry about throwing the snow into the neighbors driveway, and hence my nit picking of the chute. And by the way, a directional chute is absolutely a requirement. I have an electric "snow shovel" but all it does is throw the snow ahead so the pile in front of you just gets bigger.

Overall, I am totally pleased with the purchase. Many hours of back breaking work has been saved, and for the price, it is totally worth it.
