When I received this I had read all the reviews and tips on this product and had planned for a hard time in the assembly. Within 15 minutes it was assembled and ready to work. The next day we got a storm which typically for Maine only called for 2" but we got about 8 instead. I had read that you should snow blow frequently to avoid deep snow as it would not work as well, however, I hadn't gotten home in time to do that and this machine blew through the snow like a monster on steroids. This last storm was almost 3 feet of snow and it was close to a foot of snow each time I did the deck it was snow so hard and fast there was no doing otherwise. In the morning I did that last 10-12" of snow on the deck, then raked the roof to avoid it collapsing and of course covered the deck again but now it was hard packed from the fall. It again, went through it like it was nothing. To get to the garage it was of course the 3 feet of snow so I just tipped it back and took two swipes to bring it down and it was just so easy. I am not a big woman and I have 3 herniated disks in my neck so this machine was a God send for me. I've only gotten to use it once this winter and it really worked well. The snow wasn't deep. Only problem I had was that the chute on the end will let the snow spray straight up in the air and of course since there was some wind I got covered in snow as well. Not a real big problem since it takes such little time to clean the driveway. It even blew leaves around and kind of mulched them as well. We got this late Spring last year in preparation for this years' winter. As far as performance, it does exactly what its supposed to do, throw snow. I actually appreciate the fact that even though I have to wrestle with the electric cord (made specifically for cold temps) its still a heck of a lot better than dealing with oil/gas mixing, the pulling and the breathing in the smoke like I do with lawn mower. The brand new snow thrower was not assembled properly at the factory. The Drive shaft was loose, and the clutch kept disengaging from the plastic thrower. Then, after about 15 minutes, it completely stopped working. I opened the side cover to find out that the belt came off the pulley. Further study revealed that the drive shaft was loose, and the bearing on the pulley never got into its housing in assembly, causing the pulleys not to line up, and the thrower rubbing against its housing.

I re-assembled the unit, making sure that the bearing sat properly in its housing, and the drive shaft was tightened. The pulleys DID line up. I did not yet have a chance to use it, waiting for the next storm!

I don't know what I would have done if I were not a mechanical engineer, with my own engineering company for over 30 years. The final inspection is the most important part of production. Where do you get these things assembled anyway?!

I've had my Toro 1800 for at least 5 years. It is what it is - a light weight, no hassle snow thrower. It doesn't have the power of a gas machine but it doesn't have the hassle either! It works best on snow that hasn't been packed down too much by traffic so I like to use it fairly early after the snow has fallen. I was just using it without any problem for 12 inches of snow. It doesn't deal with sloppy wet snow very well because that tends to clog the chute. Occasionally if you run over something like a stick it may jam the rotor and you have to pull it out. Typically that's not a problem but recently doing that caused the belt to come off. I've tried to repair it myself unsuccessfully. It's easy enough to screw open the side to access the gears, but I've had trouble getting the belt back on so that it will stay on since then. I expected to be making a sad report. Not really. I was 90% done (with perfect performance except for the undersized/ice-clogged wheels) when the large belt popped off. Easy fix--3 screws and follow the directions to re-thread the belt. Parts that wear, including the rotor blades, appear to be easily replaceable. That indicates some longevity, but I can't speak to that. I've had it for less than two months. Second issue: there is the power cord to watch out for. Do follow the directions--snowblow AWAY from the outlet until you have a wide enough swath to watch that cord. Do buy the right cord--see the specs. You'll ruin the engine if you don't. Third issue: the outlets on one side of my house tend to trip often--not sure why. The other side is fine. If you have funky outlets, then you should reconsider this purchase. I bought this after our 4 ft of snow just before Christmas here in the mountains of southern California... Then it turned summer for a month.. then February hit.. Winter returns!... I finally got to break it out.

My first task was a 12" light fluffy snow. It worked great! Fast, down to pavement, and threw a long distance. My neighbor with his big gas machine was in awe and had to come over to investigate!

Second snow was trying to keep up with the dumping snow... so I went out 3 times in a day and blew off about 5" each time, started heavy, then light. Again, worked pretty well..

...last time was about 6" of moderately heavy snow. still worked good, but then something broke with the rotor shaft I believe, and it stopped throwing and began making a loud noise. The shaft was still spinning, but once snow hit it, it had no power and stopped.

I'm not the most mechanical person, but I took it apart, however I could not find out what was wrong, so I took it into a Toro dealer.

Being near LA, I took it to a place where, to no surprise, they spoke very little english. Anyway, $10 later and 3 explanations later and still not understanding what they did to it, it works fine again. Must have not been a big deal. :P

Bottom line, this thing so far has impressed me. With light snow, it throws very good.. but as would be expected, the heavier it gets, the less distance it throws. It goes down to pavement well. I wouldn't recommend to use it off pavement. I do worry about its longevity, but it seems like its a simple design so reapiring shouldn't cost a fortune. The wheels suck, but so far have not been a big issue. well worth the money for all but large jobs and huge amounts of snow.

If you don't already have one, get a 5\16 allen wrench. You might as well open it up and tighten the main parts that are supposed to be tight (do it before you even try to use it, is my suggestion).

This snow thrower works great for me in norcal mountains, but works much better with powder, than heavier wet\icy snow.

You will probably need to find your own technique (you can't just push this into a big (say, 8") pile of wet, icy snow and expect anything to happen!). I learned for my type of snow here and its current depth, that I have more success, if I pick it up by both handles and working it with layers; this isn't as laborious as shoveling for me, but it's not easy and labor-less like self-propelled, large gas models. be that as it may, I can get down to the ground, in about three passes this way - in wet, icy snow that is about 8" deep. Powder it works with much easier, but in norcal not every snow storm is powder (sometimes icier and heavier).


Once you have this, do yourself a favor and don't wait around for lots to pile up... Get on it early and this is the only snow thrower you need.

I purchased the Toro 1800 to supplement my 11 hp, 30" Sears power snow blower. Quite frankly, it's replaced it! It was a snap to assemble. This lightweight machine glides through the snow almost like a floor buffer - forward and backward, left to right. Whereas the power blower sets the speed by the transmission, the Toro 1800 operates at whatever speed you decide to walk (or run). It cleans right down to the pavement and has no problem throwing snow well beyond the width of my large driveway.
The ONLY caution is to plan ahead so that you have good cord management; being careful not to run over your cord. I recommend starting down one side of your driveway lengthwise - always blowing the snow in the same direction. This will keep the cord on the same side at all times. It's easy to change the chute direction when you turn around. I would recommend the Toro 1800 to anyone. Quite frankly, it's fun and easy to clear our driveway and walkways. This little snow blower is very powerful and very lightweight to handle. The advertisements say that this snow blower can throw the snow up to 30 feet and they are not joking. I was snow blowing my driveway and I had to stop because I was throwing the snow across the street and into the field which is about almost 40 feet from my driveway. I was shocked that this little machine could throw it that far.

A slight down side is that it does not have a drive wheel so it gets caught on the ground while you are pushing it. Not such a big deal though.

This snow blower is ideal for the small area like a small driveway or a deck. I would not recommend this snowblower for the larger jobs though. It is fast, but you would end up getting tired fast by pushing it since it does not have a drive wheel.

I bought this last month and have have used it about 3 times already. It's good on powdery or light, fluffy snow. If you have heavy snow, it's not terribly useful as it doesn't have enough horse power to move the snow.

It's good for clearing porches, walkways, and driveways that aren't too long (mine's a 4 car driveway) and using 2x50 ft extension cables seems to work fine. I would ensure that you get an outdoor extension cable that has enough tolerance (thick enough and can withstand the power needed by the snow thrower), otherwise, you're at risk of burning out the engine -- I heard this from a friend who has the same snow thrower and it burnt out the engine after 3 uses. The Toro folks said that you've got to make sure your get the right extension cable otherwise that can happen.

Another suggestion when you use it is to make sure your extension cable is always in sight and not in the path of the snow thrower as the last thing you want to do is rip up your extension cable and spend some time trying to remove it from the the snow thrower -- which can be exasperating and tedious. Don't forget that if that happens, make sure you unplug it before attempting to disengage the power cable from the snow thrower.

I had to wade thru 3 ft of snow by taking it in layers, but it worked well and got the deck cleared in 1/3rd the time it would have taken with shovel. Even tho the snow was heavy, it did well and has done even better with powdery snow. The 30 ft of throw in the ads is pretty accurate. It took a little to work out how best to avoid running over the cord, but once I was trained, the machine did all it was supposed to do. I have had my Toro 1800 power curve for about 5 years and try to convince everyone I know to buy one. I live on Long Island where the average snowfall is 3-6 inches. Not enough to pull out most snowblowers, but the power curve is great. You would think the power cord is annoying, but you get used to it with one use. The advantage of it being so lightweight is that you can move it around very easily. It can't weight more than 30 lbs or so. Even today we had about 1 foot, and the power curve could handle it. Sure, you need to work a little harder, but it's better than shoveling. And although a big snowblower would have been better on days like this, we only get a storm like this every few years. Again, if you live in a place where the snowfalls aren't usually more than 6 inches on average, this is the best product to use. This Toro was a Christmas gift from my in-laws. We have a huge gas snow plow that only starts in the summer. My neighbors also own gas snow plows but they just do not start when you really need them. Even when we have them serviced & cleaned annually they just do not start up. Well it is March 2, 2009 & we were just hit with a HUGE stow storm here on Long Island, NY, (over a foot of snow). The Toro is so light weight that I carried the Toro up to our deck and cleaned it off. Then I did the 2 car driveway. All this with a back brace on. You need a long, COLD WEATHER extension cord that really should be plugged into a GFI outlet. I also recommend you have a a small hand shovel in your coat pocket so that you can safely unclog the thrower chute if needed. You dont want to make a mistake of using your hand to clear the chute. For very deep snow at the apron of our driveway, where the snow plow trucks pushed the snow aside, I plowed half the width of the Toro thrower, basically smaller sections, and it was done in no time. I let my neighbor use it to do his driveway and now he is getting one too. I hope we don't get this much snow any time soon but if we do, I am sure that there will be a lot more Toro's in the neighborhood. Well, it took about a month of no snow before I was able to test my new snow thrower. We finally got about 9" of fairly heavy snow this past weekend so I was able to give it a good work out. The machine performed great. I had no problem getting thru the 9" of snow. It is a little slow going with this much snow but it still ate it up. Didn't throw it as far as the ad claims but it was far enough. The light weight made it easy for me to carry it to different areas that needed snow removal. The only draw back is that it is electric and you always have to be aware of the cord. Definitely get a heavy duty cold weather extension cord. The machine is worth the money just for the saved back strain alone. Cut the work time in half.
