I live in the Washington DC area. While we don't get a ton of snow every year, about every 7 years we get a big one of around 20 inches or so. As I write this, we are in the middle of a forecast 20-30 inch storm.

I bought this unit from Amazon in 2003, and it was one of the best purchases I ever made. Since I've had it, it has been a great performer, and cleans snow right down to the pavement. It's never failed to work, and never have any parts broken on it.

I like that it's so small and lightweight. It spends most of it's life hanging on a hook in the garage. Since it is light, it's easy to lift it over my head to hang it. It also has a handle behind the eject chute, which comes in handy for lifting it to clear off steps, picnic tables, etc.

I want to address some other reviewer's negative comments:

This is a light duty, single-stage, 18" snow thrower, priced at $335. Don't expect it to behave as well as a 24", $1900, 2-stage gas powered unit. Please get a grip on your expectations of what this can and cannot be expected to do.

As for the person that said it needs a way to lock the cord into the socket: It doesn't need one. Toro put a loop on the handle that you run your extension cord through twice. Do this, and the cord will never disconnect. You should have read the instructions before using!

Recommendation: Get a heavy duty extension cord, and spend the bucks on a long one. I tried using this with a 50 foot cord, and it wasn't enough. A 100 foot cord makes life so much easier. Well worth the money.

I never had a blower before and I did not want to hassle with gas etc. I use electric lawn tools so I am well acquainted with electric cords. I was a bit concerned because some of the reviews hinted that it was light and could handle only a couple of inches. This is my third year with this blower and I have been absolutely amazed at this little machine. You won't believe how far it shoots the snow. Living in Michigan, I get wet, deep, and powder. 8 to 10 inches is the deepest I've had but it worked like a charm. I have only seen one of these blowers in use besides my own and the only thing I can think of is that people must be concerned that there isn't enough power. I know nothing about cordless but it is really nothing to plugging in a 100' cord and leaving it plugged in for the winter. I bought this the night before the December 09 mid-atlantic storm where we got about 21" of snow. Understanding the capabilities of this small electric product required multiple times cleaning off the driveway and sidewalks. Note people: IT IS NOT DESIGNED FOR HEAVY DUTY WORK! However, I experienced the same problems as many others. (Hence the 4 stars) After the 1st day the drive belt slipped off the pulley. Initially I was upset & annoyed not understanding the problem. Google came to the rescue when I came across a forum with instructions on how to fix the problem. Unfortunately, these come shipped sometimes with the tensioning bolts for the belt not tighened sufficiently. So I got a handy 5/16" hex allen wrench, removed the side panels and tighened anything and everything I could. It took longer to go get the wrench than to actually fix the problem and I live about 2 miles from a store.

Anyway, now it works great. In fact as I write this we have a major storm forecast and no doubt it'll get plenty of use this weekend as they are forecasting up to 24" for the Baltimore area. In fact I think I'll show my wife how to use it ;)

So if you're like me and tired of the snow shovel and only have a driveway, sidewalks and patio to clean off this product will work great. Get yourself a 5/16" allen wrench too, you'll probably need it. Just remember that about 6" depth is the max you can expect this to handle. I purchased the 1800 Power Curve from Amazon. After I put it together (not too difficult, just a little time), I was happy to take it out and give it a try. There was some super-light, new snow that had just fallen. After about 2-3 seconds (yes, 2-3 seconds), it stopped throwing...but the motor was still making noise. After searching the web, I found that the belt often falls off. I put it back on a few times, but it would last less than a second each of 2-3 more tries.

I then took it to a Toro service center. After a week or so, they said it was fixed and it was running great and that they used it to test it and "couldn't get it to come off again." They said that Toro said it was a common problem and told them that they simply need to tighten something that was often loose. It then sat in my garage for a week or two. Since it was again snowing, I gave it another try. Before even getting to the snow, the same thing happened again.

Toro customer service is no help. She acts this is a totally rare experience. She said it must be a "one in a million" thing that my unit is having these problems!!! Ugh! Read the customer discussions that are below the reviews.

My options now are to pay to send it back to them (I don't have all of the internal packing anymore)...or find a local service center to do a warranty exchange. When I called the local service center, they acted like they had no idea what I was talking about. Looks like I now have to spend $50 to roll the dice that I'll get one that works...or cut my losses and throw it in the trash.

Overall, I can't recommend this to anyone. Poorly made, bad customer service, a lousy experience. I've spent several hours working on it and taking it to get repaired, but it has operated properly less than 10 seconds!!!

I bought this snow blower purely on a whim. My husband usually uses the big gas-powered blower but had been in poor health -- so how about a snow blower a woman doesn't have to stuggle to start? It arrived promptly, went together fairly easily - do read the directions...and it is very light. I thought maybe it was too little and light for the Western New York winter.

I had read the reviews but didn't expect it to get the heavy snow at the end of the driveway. I already had the heavy duty extension that was recommended - and it is a little bothersome to be trailing cord but once you get the hang of it - it isn't that inconvenient.

Most important - it does the job - right down to the pavement and the heavy stuff at the end of the driveway is doable too - just go a little slower. It did the sidewalk and the front steps - easy to lift and I am 66 years old and 5 foot tall. I have an extra wide drive with cars parked at the side and it let you get good and close to the vehicles without danger of damaging them.
