I bought this last year, but it was not til this weekend's Nor'easter that I had a chance to see what it was made of. Like another reviewer, I'm just north of Boston and we frequently get 4-6" of pretty heavy snow... This weekend was another story- first came the fluffy snow, then the temp went up and it rained, turning things to slush, then it got very cold, of course turning things into cement. Snow totals were in the neighborhood of 1-1.5 feet, plus some left over from a previous storm.

For the first two scenarios, the Toro did remarkably well. This thing will motor through 6 or 8 inches of snow without batting an eye, and it will throw it a good 15 feet. It's fun, it's easy to use, it's super light, and it's relatively quiet. Did I just say clearing the driveway is fun? Well, it is, kinda... For slushy snow- I used my in-laws two-stage snow machine to try to clear a few inches of slush with no luck, that thing would clog like an old snow cone machine. When I came home, the Toro just paddled its way through it, and if you went slowly enough, cleared the thick soupy stuff with great agility. As other reviewers said, if you have a smaller driveway to clear, this thing will have you out and done before you've checked the gas on your old one. A thick crust of ice or large ice rocks will be a dealbreaker on this machine, where a more solid one or two stager might get through it.

PROS: light, relatively cheap, no maintenance/oil/gas, quiet, good for smaller driveway and sidewalk, portable (hey you can even take it to the inlaws!)

CONS: not even sure why they have the plastic wheels on the back it doesn't really seem to need/use them; structure feels a little toy-like but really performs despite this, this machine does not like ice or rocks; it also doesn't like being pushed too fast. Also, it's physical size mean that more than 8-10 or so inches of snow will ride over the top and be harder to clear. It'll still handle it, but may require 2 passes.

I've had my 1800 for two seasons. And it is The Bomb! In Chicagoland,we get a fair amount of snow, most recently, a 7-inch fall. The 1800 handled it with ease, ejecting the snow 30- to 40 feet away. With a little patience, it will munch its way through the foot-deep berm deposited across my driveway by the city plow. Deeper falls might require multiple passes. Not sure about this. Still, it works equally well on my driveway, sidewalk, a lumpy flagstone walkway and even across bare ground. Need to move it over a curb or something? i deicded to purchase this item after reading the many positive reviews. So perhaps my case is just an aberration. I received it just a day before our first snowstorm here. I was eager to try it out. There were maybe 2 or 3 inches of light fluffy snow on the driveway. I plugged it in, turned it on and it worked great, shooting snow to the side a good 30 feet. That lasted for about 10 minutes, and then it simply stopped working.

It still got juice, that wasn't the problem. I could see that when i put the power on, the rotary thingy that picked up the snow wasn't turning, even after i cleared it of snow. I could manually turn it with my hand, but it wouldn't by itself. I thought maybe some part i couldn't see had frozen (it was probably 32 degrees out, not abnormally cold), but anyway, i decided to bring it in my basement (about 50 degrees) and let it sit there for about an hour, but i tried it again and it still didn't work.

I called the Toro dealer and she said it sounded like a broken belt. How could the belt break so quickly? It's brand new!! So this a.m. i had to go to the trouble of dropping it off at my local Toro dealer/repair place, and it won't be ready for 7-10 days. It's covered by a 2-year warranty, so i won't have to pay for the repair, but i'm most annoyed by this inconvenience and hassle with something i've owned for less than 24 hours. And unfortunately, our next snow storm is coming tomorrow night, so despite shelling out $279, i will still be shoveling, and not too happy about it.

I got this contraption last year (2006) after I was tired of constantly shoveling my driveway. We had several snow storms dumping at least 6 inches of snow at a time. I bought this at the start of last winter season. I had a bout of severe lower back pain. Even though I felt better by the winter last year, I wanted to buy a snow blower to respect my weaker back. When I compared many gas ones and a few electric ones, I settled on this one. This one seemed a better balance between feather light-s and huge monsters. I made the right choice. It is light enough to be handled by almost anybody and still gets the job done. Although it serves my purpose I don't see this being useful for those who live up north, Minneapolis or Canada.

Pros:

- easy start

- no maintenance
- reliable

Cons:

- have to deal with power cord; the power cord somewhat limits your mobility. I usually make a straight line to end of the driveway putting all of the power cord on one side of the grass. Then I try to work my way up in horizontal lines.
- When sometimes my neighbor cleans my sidewalk, I couldn't return the favor since my 100ft cable wouldn't reach his sidewalk :(

This works very well here in a Cincinnati winter. This works much better than you think it will. I can do a 100 ft drive with a two car turn around in about 20 min.
The only thing I will add, some reviews talk about the plastic wheels. per the instructions the wheels are only to transport the blower. The snowthrower is not self propelled, but the machine is easy to move and there is some self movement due to the turning blades.

The discharge chute can be adjusted by turning the crank from the operators position, so the snow can be properly directed.

Assembly is relatively easy (about 15 minutes)...you must connect the two parts of the handle together, attach the crank and the cross bar and secure with two nuts and bolts. Toro thoughfully used different sizes for the hex head bolts and the nuts, so they could be tightened with one socket set. You also have to attach the top of the chute to the bottom of the chute with carriage bolts and nuts.
