We got this late Spring last year in preparation for this years' winter. As far as performance, it does exactly what its supposed to do, throw snow. I actually appreciate the fact that even though I have to wrestle with the electric cord (made specifically for cold temps) its still a heck of a lot better than dealing with oil/gas mixing, the pulling and the breathing in the smoke like I do with lawn mower. This thing throws snow like no other and I do love it. I'll admit that you have to figure out how to run it without running over the electric cord but that'll come with time so far I havent ran over mine. Now my biggest frustration was the chute - it wouldnt stay in place so the first time I tried to use it I ended up throwing some snow over to my neighbors driveway since there's only a small amount of space between his driveway and mine - that was not cool. In order to adjust it, I had to buy new bolts and a locking nut so the bolts wont move and readjust the chute. After that, I never had any more problems with the chute or the overall operation of the thrower. I have a two car driveway and this does a great job. One thing I did notice, if you have uneven areas on your driveway, you will know about it when you run the thrower over it. The brand new snow thrower was not assembled properly at the factory. The Drive shaft was loose, and the clutch kept disengaging from the plastic thrower. Then, after about 15 minutes, it completely stopped working. I opened the side cover to find out that the belt came off the pulley. Further study revealed that the drive shaft was loose, and the bearing on the pulley never got into its housing in assembly, causing the pulleys not to line up, and the thrower rubbing against its housing.

I re-assembled the unit, making sure that the bearing sat properly in its housing, and the drive shaft was tightened. The pulleys DID line up. I did not yet have a chance to use it, waiting for the next storm!

I don't know what I would have done if I were not a mechanical engineer, with my own engineering company for over 30 years. The final inspection is the most important part of production. Where do you get these things assembled anyway?!

I've had my Toro 1800 for at least 5 years. It is what it is - a light weight, no hassle snow thrower. It doesn't have the power of a gas machine but it doesn't have the hassle either! It works best on snow that hasn't been packed down too much by traffic so I like to use it fairly early after the snow has fallen. I was just using it without any problem for 12 inches of snow. It doesn't deal with sloppy wet snow very well because that tends to clog the chute. Occasionally if you run over something like a stick it may jam the rotor and you have to pull it out. Typically that's not a problem but recently doing that caused the belt to come off. I've tried to repair it myself unsuccessfully. It's easy enough to screw open the side to access the gears, but I've had trouble getting the belt back on so that it will stay on since then. I'm going to try to get it serviced but if it can't be repaired I will definitely buy another since it meets my needs well and makes short work of an otherwise back breaking job.
