After spending 15 minutes opening the box, reading instructions, and assembling, I went out onto the deck with its 6" of snow and squeezed the handle. One puff of snow flew out and the auger stopped turning almost immediately. Took the Toro back into the house and took off the end plate. The large belt had popped off. Put the belt back on and, before putting the end plate back on, tried to run it "dry" inside. The belt flew off instantly. Tried reseating the belt and turning it by hand, the belt would ride off the bottom of the large white pulley before a single revolution of the large pulley.

There is a 3/16" height difference between the drive pulley and the driven pulley for the auger (large white pulley). This will cause the belt to ride off in no time at all. Researching the problem online, it seems that Toro refuses to acknowledge a manufacturing defect in a run of their product, choosing to blame the belt tensioner. Taking it to a Toro dealer will apparently result in a 2+ week delay while a new unit is drop shipped from the manufacturer, they do not service the electric models. Will the replacement work, or will it not work? Your gamble...

To fix the belt issue, measure the height differential between the driven white pulley and its drive pulley, remove the bolt that holds that drive pulley and shim up to the correct height with washers (place under the black washer already there).

Once Toro's poor workmanship was fixed with about 20 cents in washers, this snowblower made short work of 6" of snow. It also worked quite well in 12" drifts, blowing the heavier snow about 6 feet vertically and 12-15 feet straight ahead.

I'm happy that I got it working and happy with how well it works. I'm unhappy with having to correct such an obvious defect in order to get a working unit.

Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025 Order Now

This is my fifth winter season using the Toro 1800. It has held up against pretty much everything short of the 2 foot tall wall of snow/ice thrown up by the plows this year. it can dig through dry snow taller than it is, and deep wet stuff without much problem (just don't expect to throw the wet stuff into your neighbor's yard). I definitely don't recommend doing this, but the Toro's survived being repeatedly slammed against giant drifts to break them up into blowable portions. I lost a metal skid plate doing that 2 years ago.

My only complaints would be:
1. The flimsy connection for the extension cord; although I haven't had to modify any cords to get them to fit, as another reviewer mentioned. A dedicated extension cord (for the winter at least) and a zip tie fix that issue.
2. The fact that the chute won't stay angled to the side and down pushing moderate to heavy stuff.
3. My hands get tired keeping that big red switch pushed in.
4. I'd be warmer if I was using a shovel?

Do I get jealous watching my neighbor with his monster 2-stage with headlights, or this year his snow throwing riding mower attachment? Sure, but do I have to worry about maintenance or the price I paid? Not at all.Get more detail about Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025.

Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025 Buy Now

I've owned a Toro 1800 for several years...Which is why I'm shopping around for a bigger and more powerful snow blower

The electric Toro 1800 does a very good job for removing light snow over small distances. I live in New England, and have used it to clear my driveway for up to 10 inches of snowfall.

BUT, the Toro 1800 does NOT work well under heavy "wet snow" conditions. It also does not work well if the snow is allowed to freeze over time and become hard. Even under light snow conditions, it takes a LONG TIME to clear the "average" sized driveway.

The Toro 1800 IS a good machine. But unless you have all day to clear away light snow, the Toro 1800 is really only for small jobs. Get more detail about Toro 1800 18-Inch 12 Amp Electric Curve Snow Thrower #38025.

So what's the first thing you should know about snow chains in winter? In essence, you should be aware that their position depends on the specific vehicle type you have. To the rearWheel drive, snow chains, snow tires on the back end of the vehicle are placed. Finally, four-wheel drive two pairs of snow chains on all the front wheels and rear.

If you are in a state with snow chains required for life, can be professionally fitted for specific checkpoints. Indeed, asget their cars tested, but to use it lawful to make such a service. If snow snow chains fitted to expect, that your driving experience to be different. Yes, you will realize that you have incredible traction but in the end you will be too limited when it comes to speed. In fact, do not expect to go 60 mph, if you have them. They will instead go to about 30 mph (what for many areas, the actual speed limit for vehicles with tire chains in winter).

In addition, must still be careful in areas where there are rocks, roots and other hidden obstacles. If they hit hard enough, you can damage the snow chains. This is one more reason why you need is to drive slowly, especially when traveling to areas where the road is underdeveloped.

I just got my 1800 assembled and found no ground pin [green wire] at the 1800 power receptacle. There are only two blades [hot, black wire & neutral, white wire] but no green wire safety ground connection. For a product with exposed metalic surfaces intended to be used in snow [and where there is snow there is water] I find really unacceptable. How much more could it have cost to put in a proper 3 prong male power receptacle?

There is confusion for many about the differance between the white wire [neutral] and the green wire [safety ground]. The neutral carries all the product return current while the green wire only carries current if there is a fault as it just sits there waiting to save your life. The most serious fault is an internal short of hot wire [black] to product chassis. this can easily be lethal. The green wire would carry this connection to ground and pop the source breaker. Without a green wire connection this important protection is missing. These days there is almost no product made with only a two wire connection. Except of course the Toro 1800. Being an electronics engineer I am truly shocked [no pun intended] about this. It may not even be legal.

I plan to keep the 1800 but something tells me I should return it as an unsafe product.

As an aside.. All outdoor extension cords have a three wire plug. Most won't fit into the two prong male receptacle on the 1800 unless you modify the female end fitting on the power cord which creates yet more safety issues.
