After having about 40 inches of snow fall in the last month, I decided there had to be a better way to live than shoveling snow by hand and potentially risking a heart attack with all the wet snow we've received. So, I started looking online. First I looked at snow shovels. My dad has one, but he gets a lot less snow than I do. So, I looked on Amazon and found the Toro 1800. At first I wasn't sure how well it would work for my situation, but based on all the other positive reviews, I figured it would be worth a try. It was reasonably priced, and how could I go wrong with over 300 people saying it works great?

I placed my order during a lull in the snowfalls on January 3, and the unit arrived on January 7 courtesy of UPS. As soon as I got home from work, I took it inside, and took it out of the box. I was surprised how easy assembly was, as some of the reviews mentioned that it was difficult. I had no problems getting it assembled. One of the easiest things I've ever done. It took about 10 minutes and required some sockets (1/2" for the chute carriage bolt nuts, and I believe it was a 5/16" and 3/8" for the mounting plate bolts and nuts). However, if you don't have a decent socket set, pliers would do the job too.

Since we haven't had any fresh snow lately, I decided to test it on some snow in my back yard. It was about 45 degrees outside when I tested it last night, so it was extremely wet snow. I was surprised how well it did. I drove it into about 10-12" inches of heavy wet snow and it managed to move it pretty far - about 8-15 feet, depending on how hard I pushed it into the snow. The motor slowed down a bit when I drove it in hard, but it didn't stall like a gas model probably would have. I was a little leary buying an electric snowblower for snow here in Minnesota, but I have been impressed. We have had many days this years with 3"-8" of snow. The blower has no problems cutting through this and throwing it 15-30ft (depending on how wet the snow is). In addition I didn't have to worry about buying gas, worrying about starting or any kind of tune-up as I would with a gas snowblower.

The Good Points:
-Very powerful blower, throws snow 15-30ft without hesitation.
-Completed a 3-car driveway in 20 minutes.
-No gas, starting or tune-ups required. Plug in and go.
-Backed by a 2 year warranty by Toro- who does support most problems.
-Small enough to store away in my garage without its own stall.
-Not very heavy, maybe 30lbs at most if you need to move it.

Bad Points:
-The cord is an issue, and is kind of a pain to get used to. It's like a vacuum, you have to keep adjusting the cord around.
-The blower cannot handle any ice, I tried it on a patch of frozen snow and it knocked the belt loose, but after I fixed it ran like a champ again.
- The wheels are tiny and you cannot control them very well when you hit some deep snow.
- Price seemed a bit high for an electric thrower, but you get a good name Toro.

Overall I would recommend this to anyone who needs a good snow thrower in any climate. We get alot of snow in Minnesota and the blower has done great so far. We received 6-8" of snow last night. I didn't measure my drive but it was a good amount. This blower ate right through it and kept on going. I made the mistake of flinging large amounts of the snow on areas that I needed to blow (up to about a foot) and that slowed the the blower down a bit but it did get through it. I have a 3 car drive way and this blower worked great, did the entire thing plus the sidewalks. The only annoying part is having to deal with the cord, but such is life with most electric power items and I don't have to buy gas, oil or do any sort of mixing/maintenance associated with a gas blower.
